about

Sicilian musician and sound engineer Carlo Barbagallo has been producing his own music since his youth. A portion of his work is available on the web through his own Noja Recordings. He is currently a member of the rock quartet Suzanne’Silver (USA), experimental free improvisation trio LBB (Canada) and the electroacoustic collective CoMET (IT).

After his kaleidoscopic song-based work ‘9’ (2017) he started a new course to his label Noja Recordings since mid 2018, scheduling releases he contribute to produce (in charge as a musician/arranger and/or as a recording/mixing engineer) following the ‘without genre boundaries’ marker that follows his entire career.

Carlo Barbagallo is a prolific electroacoustic composer too. Since 2012 his compositional research focused around many topics: multi-channel acousmatic music, acoustic and electronic feedback, equipment and residual noise, dynamic environments for mixed music improvisation performances, improvisation and ‘programming-by-ear’ as composition techniques, algorithmic tools for transformational processes on texts which generates music scores and sounds, the aesthetic of “incomplete” musical forms, collective based composition, experimental integration between theatre and electroacoustic music.

He also collaborated with Benjamin Thigpen, Andrea Valle, Quartetto Maurice, Jean-Francois Laporte, Mika Vainio, Rajan Craveri, Stefano Bassanese, Simone Pappalardo, Multiversal, Remo De Vico, Stanislas Pili, Chloè Bieri, Tempo Reale and many others. His electroacoustic works was premiered in various international festivals and conferences as ICMC, CIM, EmuFest, DI_Stanze, PIARS, 48 Internationale Feienkurse fur Neue Musik Darmstadt, San Fedele Centre Milano, University of Huddersfield, International Festival of Contemporary Music at Biennale Musica 2013 Venezia, Conservatorio ‘G. Verdi” di Torino, CNMAT Berkeley, Réseaux des arts médiatiques at Conservatoire de musique de Montréal, Fountain School of Performing Arts at Dalhousie University Canada, ArsMusica Bruxelles. Some of these electroacoustic works was released under the The Noja Recordings Archives through the composer bandcamp page (barbagallo.bandcamp.com)

His new release ‘iAmInTiLt,BoB!’ collects four studies for electric guitar and live electronics Barbagallo composed between the end of 2015 and the first months of 2016 for his postgraduate degree in ‘Electronic Music’

Study #1 (My richness is…) is a twenty minutes speculation on producing no-input sound-like improvisations though the only use of a table-top electric guitar. The guitar here was conceived as an electroacoustic source device in the same integrated plan with the analog processing devices and tools used. As in his previous work ‘Duet For Lovers’ (The Noja Recordings Archives: NISC - 2016) for NISC (No-Input Sound-Card) two free improvisation layers are simply mixed together to show the experimental approach to sound research in its total integrity.

The release figures three other versions of the piece, re-thinked for a possibile interpreter. In this new instance (…Your Failure), the piece is categorized into groups of samples that are triggered by the performer following an almost-random algorithimic generated score. The guitar here is conceived here only as a controller for triggering events through pitch-analysis Score generation is programmed to be more and more complicated and it will impossibile for the guitarist to follow it. Mistake occurance will change the piece form and sound through different strategies of error sonification and 15th mistake will declare the end of a movement (four movements are prescribed).
Last note of the instructions for the piece reports: “Practicing with this you will notice that maybe it is better stop to play music written by others and start to experiment with sounds by your own, creating your own world. We all know THIS is a totally waste of time. Smile anyway.”

Study #2 is a sort of haiku sound composition, a short poetic reflection around Isolation, Absence, Denial. Here the instrument is deprived of its characteristic device: the pickup. The performer have to isolate a limited number of performance gestures (the interpretation of ‘gesture’ is up to him) and improvise with them for nearly two minutes with a solid body electric guitar unplugged and recorded with a microphone nearest to the strings as possible. Improvisation have to keep a formal isolation between the gestures, even allowing concatenations and iterations; the general dynamics should be from ppp to p. A second improvisation will be recorded, listening the previous one. The recordings will be assigned respectively to left and right channels. A third improvisation will be recorded or performed live, assigned to a third center channel. A simple pre-defined sound processes chain will be applied on the mix of the three recordings and fade in and out as described in score/instructions will be performed. The realisation of the study is guided only through a simple procedural score and provided audio documentation. The release contains the composer version and the versions of the three other members of Suzanne’Silver (Dario Serra, Francesco Accardi & Mauro Felice), Kevin Thompson (Enablers), Virgile Abela (HoaxHoax), Tom De Testa (Burst), Valerio Vittoria (Calavera), Luca Morino (CoMET), Edoardo Vogrig (Tweedo). On all versions sound processes and mixing are performed by the composer.

In Study #3 (Wie Ein Naturlaut) and Study #4 (Untitled) the electric guitar is inside a modular sound processing digital system. The complex network of interactions between the modules is controlled in real time by the guitar sound parameters and triggered by the performer through foot-controllers. Almost all sounds in the piece are guitar sounds processed, real time recorded and manipulated; the other sound source is a complex no-input feedback chain between the modules, also controlled by the performer through his playing. The live version of the pieces are diffused by a tri-phony (two side full-range speakers and a valve amp for the guitar between them).
